Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Signing Ceremony Planned For September 26th!

A signing ceremony for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons will take place in New York on September 26 (also the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons). Coinciding with the the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly many presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers will be in town.

This is a great opportunity for us to boost support for the treaty. There are currently 68 countries that voted in favor of the treaty’s adoption on 7 July but haven’t yet signed it. See below for a full list. Even if your country is unlikely to sign on 26 September, the ceremony provides a good opportunity to exert pressure for a change in position.

Here’s How You Can Take Action Now!

1. Check that your foreign ministry is aware of the signing ceremony. A notice was sent
 last week
to the New York missions of countries that voted in favour of the treaty’s adoption.

2. Find out which high-level official will be representing your country at this year’s UN General Assembly, then write a letter urging him/her to sign the treaty.

3. Reach out to others who might be able to influence the decision, including members of parliament, the head of the Red Cross/Crescent national society, religious leaders etc.
