Skipper Steve Buck and Golden Rule on board project lead Helen Jaccard welcomed new crew members Bill Flounders from Berkeley and Elicha Gasteglumande from Walnut Creek. We headed out of the Golden Gate with all sails streaming. We ate well; we set watch; and we set course due South.
Here’s the scene for the Berkeley to Santa Cruz transit: exceptionally light air – is this the Northern California coast?… a clear night sky – where’s the San Francisco coast fog bank?… and a waxing full moon – this happens every month, but folks from the Bay Area usually don’t get to see it. It was a beautiful night. As soon as we headed South though, the wind fell; so we just motored on. Well, even inanimate objects demand a break sometimes – or they just take a break on their own. Fan belt failures were readily addressed thanks to a well stocked spare parts locker, a complete set of tools (thank you to the Humboldt home team), and the persistence and attention of the entire crew. With motor repairs complete, we were back underway and watching the moon set. I’ve never seen a harvest moon “in reverse”. I’ve seen that beautiful orb rise orange then turn to yellow and then white; it was a stunning experience to see her go from bright white to golden orange, then finally to deep, crimson red as she sank below the western horizon. We met the morning with hot coffee and entered the Santa Cruz harbor just five hours later than scheduled. Boat travel is fantastic – where else in this day and age can you say “only five hours late”.
The Golden Rule draws an audience – as soon as she arrives – wherever she goes. I was proud to tell her story at the fuel dock in Berkeley and as soon as we docked at Santa Cruz. To the Veteran’s For Peace entire Golden Rule Project – Thank you for continuing to carry this critical message via this historic vessel. Wishing you Fair Winds and Following Seas.
