May 2014 Update

April has come and gone in a flash. The tall ships, The Lady Washington and The Hawaiian Chieftain were both in port this month and so we invited the crews of both vessels out to the boat yard for a party. Food, drinks, big bonfire and of course Clog dancing. Yo Ho Ho and some really disgusting sea chanties that I can’t put into this report but it was all good.

The scuppers are finished, cut out, sanded, glassed and painted. it took two of us a week to do them. Port and starboard gunnel caps are also finished but not bedded, we still need some hard ware. I’ve cut out and sanded two pieces of Jakoba (an extremely hard and heavy exotic hardwood, not sure where it comes from) to go across the top of the transom to help support the transom cap and to act as a bumper. The transom cap is next and it will be Sapele like the gunnels. The lockers up forward across from the head are 95% finished, I only need to add some hooks to hang things on. A good deep drawer is also finished.

Mike has cut a hatch hole in the fore deck and will be building a hinged cover for it this week. He’s also finished making two 11 foot long hand grips to be on the top of the cabin, and 6 really fine single hand grip for inside the cabin. Steve is designing a wiring harness for the entire boat so hopefully we can get it installed prior to building the bunks and galley.
