06 Feb Golden Rule Project at “Whale for Peace” Sculpture Event
Zoe Byrd and Barbara Cooney (on the right) attended a very special event on Saturday December 14 at the Mouna Arts and Cultural Village’s Koholā Ola Peace Project.
In Hawaiian culture the Koholā (Humpback Whale) are sacred for grace, intelligence, and beauty. They live in peaceful co-existence and community. As they swim they bring energy of harmony to all of us. Their songs teach us that we can live with aloha, love each other, and understand our oneness, and take care of Mother Earth. This project brings awareness to all of us the importance of protecting and preserving the whales and the oceans.

Zoe Byrd said, “Sooriya’s copper sculpture Whale for Peace is a wonder to behold (when complete it will grace the new local Community Center in Waianae.) As is the community involvement in the creation of the life size Koholā (Humpback Whale) mother and baby. It was an honor to participate in the event and to join in “pounding” the mother whale into shape.
‘The heartfelt sharings by Sooriya, the Oahu Marshallese community, and the Golden Rule Project were well received by those in attendance, as well as successful in forming alliances.
‘Hana Hou Magazine, the Hawaiian Air in-flight magazine, had a writer and a photographer at the event! We excitedly await the published article coming out of that, to be sure!
‘Golden Rule has made a solid connection with the three Marshallese representatives presenting at the event. Jendrick and Robert can assist us with an Oahu Marshallese send off when we depart on the continuation of the “Peace in the Pacific” voyage. They plan to visit the Golden Rule when we return to Oahu, and I am hoping to treat them to a day sail, with Captain Katie. They can also assist Golden Rule Project with contacts for a welcome reception in Marshall Islands.”
Mahalo to all for making this event a grand success!
