SUMMARY:Hiroshima to Hope Lantern Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:From Hiroshima to Hope\, Seattle’s annual peace event honoring the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and all victims of war and violence\, takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday\, August 6 at Green Lake. This year’s event marks the 71st anniversary of the atomic bombings. The Seattle event is one of the largest commemorations held outside of Japan. \nPre-program activities begin at 6:00 p.m. and include lantern calligraphy and folding of peace cranes. A family program with music and speakers\, featuring speaker Imam Jamal Rahman\, co-founder and Muslim Sufi minister at Interfaith Community Sanctuary\, begins at 7 PM. Performers include the popular Japanese-American drum performance group\, Seattle Kokon Taiko. The candle-lit lanterns are floated on the lake at dusk. This year’s ceremony again includes the exhibition of artist Yukiyo Kawano’s fabric sculpture\, “Little Boy (folded)\,” a haunting depiction of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6\, 1945. \nVeterans For Peace\, Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action\, and the VFP Golden Rule Project will have a table and educate the public about peace and nuclear disarmament during the lantern making part of the event.\n \nSee From Hiroshima to Hope Facebook Page for more information.\nPhoto: Martha Brice

SUMMARY:Peace Fleet meets Parade of War Ships on Elliott Bay
DESCRIPTION:On August 2 the annual Parade of (Navy war) Ships will arrive in Elliott Bay in downtown Seattle and a flotilla of peace boats will be there to provide a contrasting message.  The Peace Fleet will be bigger than normal this year\, as the Golden Rule inspires people to challenge the idea of war ships coming to our public festivals like Seafair.  These ships and other military recruiting tools like the Blue Angels normalize the weapons of war\, and indeed\, war itself.  It costs over a million dollars to bring these ships into Puget Sound – not a good way for our tax dollars to be spent! \nThe Golden Rule protests in front of two Navy War Ships in Portland for “Fleet Week”\, during the Rose Festival. \nPhoto by Sara Kirschenbaum

SUMMARY:Indigenous Canoe Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Golden Rule has offered to be a support boat for the annual Indigenous Canoe Journey.  We plan to join the canoes Saturday evening\, July 23 in Swinomish near Anacortes and finish on July 29 or 30 in Olympia.  This will enable the crew and the project to make a strong connection and cultural exchanges with several indigenous tribes – in so doing\, our message of peace and nuclear disarmament can be shared with the original peoples of the Pacific Northwest and their messages of peace and protection of mother earth can be shared with us.
